rana in ‘ranunculus’ means ‘frog’ in latin.
i’m so delighted to find this out today–i love ranunculi and frogs both!
the other day on the train, i sat across from a man who opened up a book and started reading with such hunger. to my surprise, it wasn’t some informational, managerial, economics book but murakami’s kafka on the shore. he was so engrossed in his reading that he had his mouth opened just a little bit and almost missed his stop. what a sight. it’s not often you see a man read a novel.
i got the pretty copy of sense and sensibility (i was happy to find i do not already have a copy in my library, although i must admit i didn’t look hard enough). reading it as well as carrying it is a joy. 1996 is when i fell in love with shakespeare. 2011 is when i’m falling in love with austen.
i hope they make a pretty copy of persuasion. just the thought of it makes me want to pick up a bouquet of ranunculi.
